ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES@#To provide a guideline for genealogy inference and family lineage investigation through a study of the mismatch tolerance distribution of Y-STR loci in Chinese Han male lineage.@*METHODS@#Three Han lineages with clear genetic relationships were selected. YFiler Platinum PCR amplification Kit was used to obtain the typing data of 35 Y-STR loci in male samples. The variation of Y-STR haplotypes in generation inheritance and the mismatch tolerance at 1-7 kinship levels were statistically analyzed.@*RESULTS@#Mutations in Y-STR were family-specific with different mutation loci and numbers of mutation in different lineages. Among all the mutations, 66.03% were observed on rapidly and fast mutating loci. At 1-7 kinship levels, the number of mismatch tolerance ranged from 0 to 5 on all 35 Y-STR loci, with a maximum step size of 6. On medium and slow mutant loci, the number of mismatch tolerance ranged from 0 to 2, with a maximum step size of 3; on rapidly and fast mutant loci, the number of mismatch tolerance ranged from 0 to 3, with a maximum step size of 6.@*CONCLUSIONS@#Combined use of SNP genealogy inference and Y-STR lineage investigation, both 0 and multiple mismatch tolerance need to be considered. Family lineage with 0-3 mismatch tolerance on all 35 Y-STR loci and 0-1 mismatch tolerance on medium and slow loci can be prioritized for screening. When the number of mismatch tolerance is eligible, family lineages with long steps should be carefully excluded. Meanwhile, adding fast mutant loci should also be handled with caution.

ABSTRACT

In recent years, reports of adverse reactions related to traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) have been on the rise, especially some traditionally considered "non-toxic" TCM(such as Dictamni Cortex). This has aroused the concern of scholars. This study aims to explore the metabolomic mechanism underlying the difference in liver injury induced by dictamnine between males and females through the experiment on 4-week-old mice. The results showed that the serum biochemical indexes of liver function and organ coefficients were significantly increased by dictamnine(P<0.05), and hepatic alveolar steatosis was mainly observed in female mice. However, no histopathological changes were observed in the male mice. Furthermore, a total of 48 differential metabolites(such as tryptophan, corticosterone, and indole) related to the difference in liver injury between males and females were screened out by untargeted metabolomics and multivariate statistical analysis. According to the receiver operating characteristic(ROC) curve, 14 metabolites were highly correlated with the difference. Finally, pathway enrichment analysis indicated that disorders of metabolic pathways, such as tryptophan metabolism, steroid hormone biosynthesis, and ferroptosis(linoleic acid metabolism and arachidonic acid metabolism), may be the potential mechanism of the difference. Liver injury induced by dictamnine is significantly different between males and females, which may be caused by the disorders of tryptophan metabolism, steroid hormone biosynthesis, and ferroptosis pathways.

ABSTRACT

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is one of the most common sexually transmitted pathogens. It can cause a variety of diseases such as condyloma acuminatum, anal cancer, penile cancer and oropharyngeal cancer in men, resulting in a high disease burden. With the development of society, the application of HPV vaccines in males has attracted more attention. Currently, there are many clinical trials and real-world research results of HPV vaccines applied to boys and men worldwide, and many countries have introduced HPV vaccination for underage boys into their national immunization programs. This article intended to review the research progress in the efficacy of HPV vaccines in male population.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Introduction: Diagnosing and treating human immunodeficiency virus carriers has led to the identification of a higher prevalence of said infection and, therefore, of a higher risk of transmission of the virus. Objective: To find out the trend of new cases of human immunodeficiency virus infection carriers at the Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social (IMSS) in Mexico within the 2003-2017 period. Methods: Patients affiliated to the IMSS were analyzed. Data from 42,181 newly-diagnosed cases were collected, with variations related to gender and age being observed. Age-standardized rates per 100,000 population were obtained. Results: The highest mean annual percentage change in males was documented in adolescents (13.0, 95% CI = 9.9, 16.1). Heterogeneous trends were recorded for women, with a significant overall decrease (-2.2, 95% CI = -3.4,-1.0), but growing trends were also observed in some groups. Conclusions: Our results suggest that the human immunodeficiency epidemic in patients cared for at the Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social is concentrated in males, with a growing trend particularly in adolescents.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Introduction: Recent studies have confirmed differences among the female and male sex and their influence in basic aspects of biology, which can also impact in the etiology and physiopathology of diseases in the neonatal stage. It is known that changes in the epigenetic regulation due to factors that affect the exposition to fetal cortisol show specific effects according to the type of sex. Objective: Determine the possible relation among the epigenetic changes, male sex and the neonatal diseases. Methods: It was carried out a bibliographic search in Pubmed, Scielo, LILACS and in the platform called Clínica Key, in the period 2017-2020, in English and Spanish languages. The following key words were used: sexual differences, male sex, epignetic and neonatal diseases. Analysis and Integration of the information: This review deals with aspects as epigenetic in human development and its relation with sex, the role of placenta and its relation with fetal sex, perinatal complications and their relation with male sex. In addition, the review also mentions respiratory conditions, neurologic conditions and others of the neonatal stage related with sex and the possible relation with epigenetic mechanisms. Conclusions: Male sex is a predisposing factor in the prevalence of certain neonatal diseases. Epigenetic can be involved in the onset of many neonatal diseases modulated by the sex due to mechanisms that are not clear yet. Future researches might show more knowledge on the etiopathogenesis of these disease and the way to approach them.

ABSTRACT

This article debates meanings produced by men about gender relations and violence against women. Such reflections were generated from one research about violence against women and primary health care performed at Maceió city. In the research, three men, invited after daily observations, were interviewed at a primary health care centre at Maceió city. The interviews were transcribed, divided in categories and analyzed from the theoretical framework of the feminist perspective of gender in interface with the Discursive Practices and Production of Senses. From the interviews' speech, we discuss about how men recognize (or not) the unequal relations of power that structure society and how this recognition is reflected in discourses about practices of violence against women. From this, we perceive the need to include men in the discussions about violence against women, based on a critical and analitical look at the gender category.(AU)

ABSTRACT

Lower urinary tract symptoms suggestive of benign prostate hyperplasia (LUTS/BPH) and depression are both increasing in Chinese aging males. However, the relationship still remains unknown. To explore their relationship, a retrospective cohort study based on propensity score matching (PSM) was conducted by analyzing the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study dataset. After data cleaning, a total of 5125 participants were enrolled and subjected to PSM; 1351 pairs were matched and followed for 2 years. Further logistic regression and restricted cubic spline (RCS) were performed to evaluate, model and visualize the relationship between depression and LUTS/BPH. Moreover, subgroup analyses and sensitivity analyses were adopted to verify the robustness of the conclusions. Before PSM, depressive patients showed higher odds of LUTS/BPH in all three models adjusting for different covariates (P < 0.001). After PSM, univariate logistic regression revealed that depressive patients had higher risks for LUTS/BPH than participants in the control group (odds ratio [OR] = 2.10, P < 0.001). The RCS results indicated a nonlinear (P < 0.05) and inverted U-shaped relationship between depression and LUTS/BPH. In the subgroup analyses, no increased risks were found among participants who were not married or cohabitating, received an education, had an abnormal body mass index (<18.5 kg m

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to propose an operational definition of late-onset hypogonadism (LOH) that incorporates both clinical symptoms and serum testosterone measurements to evaluate the prevalence of LOH in aging males in China. A population-based sample of 6296 men aged 40 years-79 years old was enrolled from six representative provinces in China. Serum total testosterone (TT), sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG), and luteinizing hormone (LH) were measured and free testosterone (cFT) was calculated. The Aging Males' Symptoms (AMS) scale was used to evaluate the LOH symptoms. Finally, 5078 men were included in this analysis. The TT levels did not decrease with age (P = 0.59), and had no relationship with AMS symptoms (P = 0.87 for AMS total score, P = 0.74 for ≥ 3 sexual symptoms). The cFT levels decreased significantly with age (P < 0.01) and showed a negative association with the presence of ≥ 3 sexual symptoms (P = 0.03). The overall estimated prevalence of LOH was 7.8% (395/5078) if a cFT level <210 pmol l

ABSTRACT

Objective:To investigate the association of alcohol drinking and the incident risk of type 2 diabetes in men and to provide evidences for early prevention of diabetes. Methods:Rural adult males without diabetes in Deqing County, Zhejiang Province were enrolled. A dynamic prospective cohort study was conducted. Data were collected through questionnaires, physical examination, experimental measurements and a electronic follow-up database. Cox multivariate regression was performed to assess the association of alcohol drinking and the incident risk of type 2 diabetes in men. Results:During the follow-up period (7.15±2.90 years), 354 men developed diabetes, and the incidence rate was 4.15/1 000 person-years. After adjusting for confounding factors, the incident risk of type 2 diabetes among the men with high alcohol drinking frequency (≥7 times/week) and low single alcohol intake (0.1-19.9 g/occasion) was lower than that among non-alcohol drinkers, and the value of HR (95%CI) was 0.72 (0.56-0.94) and 0.54 (0.30-0.99), respectively. Consumption of ≥40.0 g alcohol per occasion 3-6 times a week increased the incidence of type 2 diabetes, and consumption of <40.0 g alcohol per occasion over 7 times a week decreased the incidence of type 2 diabetes, with the value of HR (95%CI) of 1.53 (1.02-2.30) and 0.52 (0.28-0.99) respectively. Conclusion:Different alcohol drinking patterns affect the incident risk of type 2 diabetes among rural adult males in Deqing County. Further study on alcohol drinking and diabetes may have ethical and practical significance for the prevention and control of diabetes in rural China.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Objective: The objective of this study is to study association between testosterone and diabetes in Kashmiri males. Subjects and methods: A total of 300 males with Type 2 diabetes visited an outpatient and inpatient clinic at Shri Maharaja Hari Singh (SMHS) hospital, Srinagar, J&K India. The blood sugar and HbA1c, which are the markers of diabetes, and sérum testosterone levels were measured. The blood samples from both the cases and controls were collected. Results: Out of 300 subjects, 42% had a testosterone deficiency. A relationship between type 2 diabetic males and healthy males was observed, and testosterone levels were determined to be significantly lower among diabetic males (p < 0.001) when compared to healthy males. Then, we compared diabetic markers among testosterone deficient and normal testosterone level groups; the mean fasting plasma glucose (p = 0.0019) and glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c; p = 0.0449) levels were significantly higher in the testosterone deficient group than in the control group. To elucidate the relationship between the serum total testosterone level and fasting plasma glucose and HbA1c values, Pearson's correlation test was performed. Fasting plasma glucose levels (r = −0.252, p = 0.001) and HbA1c values (r = −0.697, p = 0.001) showed a significant negative correlation with serum testosterone levels among diabetic males. Conclusions: This study shows that diabetes causes low testosterone levels among males, and lower testosterone levels can act as a marker for diabetes. Thus, with timely intervention, mortality and co-morbidity associated with diabetes can be prevented.

ABSTRACT

The objective of this study was to evaluate, for two years, the performance of 124 female and 105 male Braford calves born during the first and second halves of the same calving season and the effects of birth period on the development of males until slaughter, as yearlings, and of females until calving, after having mated at 13-15 months of age. Early-born females were heavier than those born late at weaning (119.3 vs 109.9kg; P<0.05), at the start of the breeding season (275.0 vs 263.0kg; P<0.05), and at the end of the breeding season (300.0 vs 289.5kg; P<0.05), in addition to being more fertile (70 vs 50% pregnancy rate). There was no difference (P>0.05) in the development of males born early in relation to those born late, except for weaning weight, which was higher in the former. Steers born early were ready for slaughter at a younger age (459.6 vs 490.1 days; P<0.05), and both groups (early- and late-born) had a body condition classified as fat (4.21 points). In intensive production systems, both male and female calves perform better if they are born during the first half of the calving season.(AU)

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND The term osteomyelitis (OSM) was first used by the French surgeon Edouard Chassaignac in 1852, who defined the disease as an inflammatory process accompanied by bone destruction caused by an infecting microorganism. The clinical manifestation and the natural history of OSM depend on several factors. OSM mostly affects the growing ends of long bones. We wanted to study the organisms causing osteomyelitis and their antimicrobial susceptibility pattern.METHODSPus and bone aspirate were collected from 115 diagnosed patients of osteomyelitis and were processed for isolation of organisms by standard microbiological techniques. Isolates were identified by various biochemical reactions and were subjected to antimicrobial susceptibility test as per CLSI guidelinesby Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion technique on Mueller Hinton agar (MHA). Data collected in the questionnaire was entered and analysed in Epi Info software version 7.2.RESULTSIn 101 samples, 116 organisms were isolated. In 14 samples no organism was isolated, which can be attributed to the viral aetiology, parasites and anaerobes. Acute Osteomyelitis (AOSM) was found to be more common in the age group of 1-10 years, whereas chronic osteomyelitis (COSM) was found more commonly in 21-30 and 31-40 years age group. Male to Female ratio was 2.2:1. Bones involved in AOSM and COSM were mostly femur followed by tibia and humerus. S. aureus was the most predominant isolate. All the isolates of S. aureus showed 100% sensitivity to Vancomycin, Amikacin, Netilmicin, Chloramphenicol. Out of 48 isolates of S. aureus, 37.50% were MRSA, 6.25% were ICR, 14.58% were MRSA+ICR found.CONCLUSIONSOsteomyelitis is found to be highest in third decade, with the males being predominantly affected. Acute osteomyelitis is predominantly seen in children, whereas chronic osteomyelitis in adults. Even though Staphylococcus aureus has always remained the most common etiological agent of osteomyelitis, increasing infections due to Gram negative bacilli and even poly-microbial infections are gaining importance. MRSA infection is known to increase post-operative complications. Introduction of MBL or carbapenemase production in Gram negative bacilli is a matter of great concern. Timely knowledge of aetiology and antimicrobial resistance pattern of osteomyelitis isolates can help in rational use of antibiotics and control of drug resistance.

ABSTRACT

Erectile dysfunction (ED), a condition closely related to cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, is frequently associated with obesity. In this study, we aimed to determine the prevalence of ED and evaluate the associated risk factors in a cohort of 254 young (18-49 years) nondiabetic obese (body mass index [BMI] ≥ 30 kg m-2) men from primary care. Erectile function (International Index of Erectile Function [IIEF-5] questionnaire), quality of life (Aging Males' Symptoms [AMS scale]), and body composition analysis (Tanita MC-180MA) were determined. Total testosterone was determined using high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to study the factors associated with ED. ED prevalence was 42.1%. Subjects with ED presented higher BMI, waist circumference, number of components of the metabolic syndrome, AMS score, insulin resistance, and a more unfavorable body composition than those without ED. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that a pathological AMS score (odds ratio [OR]: 4.238, P 40% of subjects. A pathological AMS score, the degree of obesity, and age were positively associated with ED, while elevated HDL-cholesterol levels were inversely associated with the odds of presenting ED. Further prospective studies are needed to evaluate the long-term consequences of ED in this population.

ABSTRACT

A shift or expansion of the realized niche at different life stages is often ignored while implementing conservation actions. We tested whether habitat extent and associations at different life stages of two sympatric primate species belonging to thesame taxonomic family vary with respect to their dietary requirements. We expected the groups and solitary males of afrugivorous species to have a smaller extent of suitable habitat than those of a folivorous species. We used MaxEntmodelling to create habitat suitability maps using occurrence records and high-resolution remotely sensed environmentallayers for groups and solitary males of highly frugivorous lion-tailed macaques and highly folivorous Nilgiri langurs in theWestern Ghats, India. We found that the Nilgiri langur groups and lion-tailed macaque groups occupied a similar extent inour study area. However, due to weaker restrictions, the Nilgiri langur groups were observed to inhabit a broader variety ofhabitats than the lion-tailed macaque groups. Solitary males of both the lion-tailed macaque and Nilgiri langur migratethroughout the landscape, with only a 50% habitat overlap with their respective groups. We propose that a species’ dietaryrequirements have differential effects on habitat use, especially during dispersal, at the solitary stage in males.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is more prevalent in men, population studies show a ratio of 2:1, however in clinical studies the frequency is as high as 6:1. These differences in the clinical setting may be a consequence of variations in the reporting of symptoms in men compared to women. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate gender differences between women and men with recent diagnosis of OSA. Patients: A cross-sectional, study of patients undergoing home sleep apnea testing (HSAT) with clinical suspicion of OSA. Demographic, anthropometric, comorbidities and HSAT variables were collected. We performed t student analysis, Mann-Whitney test or chi square test as appropriate. RESULTS: 1,044 patients were included: mean age 53.2 ± 14 years, 76% men. Women with OSA have a higher BMI (32.2 ± 6.1 vs 30.8 ± 5.0, p = 0.002), were older (61.4 ± 12.2 vs 52.6 ± 13.9, p <0.001), but have a lower neck circumference (NC) (38.1 ± 3.6 vs. 43.2 ± 3.3, p <0.001). The women presented lower AHI and shorter duration of apneas. Although the classic symptoms of apnea and daytime sleepiness showed no differences, women reported more frequently insomnia, morning headache, depression and use of hypnotic drugs. CONCLUSIONS:: Clinical differences between gender are present at time of diagnosis. Woman are older and more obese, although they have a lower NC. They have a milder disease, but they refer to be more tired, headache, insomnia and depression. We must be alert in the different clinical presentation of women to improve the diagnostic suspicion.

ABSTRACT

The Mauritian population has the highest life expectancy in Africa. However, diabetes, ischemic heart disease, stroke, influenza and pneumonia, and lung, breast and colon-rectum cancers are countering the health success of the country. Males, unlike females, are burdened by these diseases. The study assessed the contribution age and cause-specific mortality to the gap in life expectancy among males and females in Mauritius from 2005 to 2015. The role of the age and cause-specific mortality to life expectancy among males and females in Mauritius was decomposed using the Andreev decomposition approach. The study revealed that recorded mortality rates from diabetes, ischemic heart disease, stroke, influenza, and pneumonia were higher among males than females. Health promotion activities will need to be scaled for these causes of death especially among males to achieve national and international health goals.
